Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT)

PGT screens IVF embryos for chromosomal and genetic problems before transfer — helping select the healthiest embryo, improving success and reducing the risk of miscarriage.

What is PGT

What is PGT?

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) is the genetic analysis of embryos created through IVF, before they are transferred to the uterus. A few cells are gently biopsied from each embryo or blastocyst and tested, so that only healthy embryos are selected for transfer.

There are three types: PGT-A checks for the correct number of chromosomes (the commonest cause of failed implantation and miscarriage); PGT-M tests for a specific inherited single-gene disease; and PGT-SR detects chromosomal structural rearrangements. PGT improves the chance of choosing an embryo that can lead to a healthy baby.

Indications

Who may benefit

PGT is valuable in specific, well-defined situations.

Advanced maternal age, where chromosomal errors are commoner.
Recurrent miscarriage or recurrent implantation failure.
A known inherited single-gene disorder in the family.
A parent carrying a chromosomal rearrangement (translocation).
A wish to maximise success per transfer and avoid twins.
Advantages

The advantages of PGT

Selecting the healthiest embryo before transfer.

Improves implantation rates per transfer.
Reduces the risk of miscarriage from chromosomal errors.
Avoids passing on a known inherited genetic condition.
Supports single-embryo transfer, reducing twins.
Shortens time to pregnancy by helping avoid transfers unlikely to succeed.
Offers reassurance for older couples or those with prior loss.
Types of PGT

Types of PGT

PGT-A

Checks embryos have the correct number of chromosomes — the commonest cause of failed implantation and miscarriage.

PGT-M

Tests for a specific inherited single-gene disease known to run in the family.

PGT-SR

Detects chromosomal structural rearrangements, such as translocations, carried by a parent.

Step by Step

How PGT works

Integrated into an IVF cycle, with testing before transfer.

01

IVF & Blastocyst Culture

Eggs are collected, fertilised by ICSI and grown to blastocyst stage.

02

Embryo Biopsy

A few cells are gently removed from each blastocyst by skilled embryologists.

03

Freeze & Test

Embryos are vitrified while the biopsy is genetically analysed.

04

Genetic Analysis

PGT-A, PGT-M or PGT-SR identifies the chromosomally/genetically healthy embryos.

05

Healthy-embryo Transfer

A screened normal embryo/embryos are transferred in a later frozen cycle.

PGT cycles typically use a freeze-all approach, since results take time. However, we also offer rapid PGT-A (24-hour results) which may allow for fresh embryo transfer in select cases.

Success & Safety

Real chances, honestly explained

Every fertility journey is unique. PGT success rates depend on several medical and lifestyle factors.

Factors affecting success

  • The reason for testing and the embryos available
  • Egg and embryo quality (PGT selects, it cannot create)
  • The woman's age
  • Uterine receptivity at transfer
  • Laboratory and genetics expertise
At Bavishi Fertility Institute, we focus on personalised treatment plans rather than one-size-fits-all success claims.

PGT improves the chance per transfer by selecting healthy embryos, but it depends on having suitable embryos and cannot guarantee a pregnancy.

Risks & Considerations

Risks & considerations

Needs good embryos

PGT selects among embryos but cannot improve a poor cohort.

How We Help: We advise honestly whether PGT is likely to help in your case.

No suitable embryo

Sometimes testing finds no chromosomally normal embryo to transfer.

How We Help: This is difficult but important information for planning the next step.

Biopsy & cost

PGT adds a biopsy, the freeze-all approach and extra cost.

How We Help: We recommend it selectively, where the benefit justifies it.

FAQ

PGT — your questions answered

PGT-A checks the number of chromosomes; PGT-M tests for a specific inherited single-gene disease; PGT-SR detects structural chromosomal rearrangements such as translocations.

In the right couples, yes — by selecting a chromosomally normal embryo it improves implantation per transfer and lowers miscarriage risk, though it cannot guarantee pregnancy.

Performed by experienced embryologists at the blastocyst stage, it is considered safe and does not harm the baby's development.

Not always. Sometimes no chromosomally normal embryo is found, which is valuable information even though it is hard news.

Usually yes. Embryos are frozen while results return, then a tested, healthy embryo is transferred in a later cycle.
