What is MACS
What is MACS?
MACS (Magnetic-Activated Cell Sorting) separates apoptotic — that is, damaged or dying — sperm cells from healthy ones. The damaged sperm are labelled with magnetic nanoparticles and captured in a column, while intact, live sperm pass through and are collected for fertilisation by IVF or ICSI.
MACS is performed entirely on the semen sample in the laboratory — there is no procedure on the patient. It is considered as an add-on to improve the quality of sperm selected, particularly where sperm DNA damage is a concern.
