What is IMSI
What is IMSI?
IMSI (Intracytoplasmic Morphologically Selected Sperm Injection) uses specialised lenses and software to magnify sperm far more than in conventional ICSI. This lets the embryologist examine the fine structure of each sperm and choose those that look most normal.
Selection happens in two stages — first at standard magnification, as in ICSI, and then under very high magnification to identify structurally normal sperm for fertilisation. Because the assessment is detailed and subjective, the experience of the embryologist is central to the technique.

Yes — IMSI is considered safe when performed by experienced specialists, though, as with any procedure, potential risks should be discussed with your doctor.
IMSI is typically recommended for poor sperm morphology, recurrent IVF/ICSI failures, or previous poor embryo quality, rather than for every couple.
No. IMSI does not guarantee pregnancy; success depends on the underlying causes of infertility and several individual factors.
IMSI is a form of ICSI that uses much higher magnification to assess sperm structure in detail before injection, so the embryologist can select the most normal-looking sperm.
No specific adverse effects have been shown, although sperm being outside the body for longer during selection may, in theory, reduce fertilising capacity. This is minimised by careful lab conditions.
The procedure takes a few hours overall, covering sperm selection, egg retrieval and, subsequently, embryo transfer.
Maintain a healthy diet, avoid alcohol and tobacco, manage stress and follow prescribed medications. A short period of abstinence before giving the semen sample may improve morphology.
